Golf cart rentals available in downtown Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The City of Tampa is providing a new way for people to see the sights. Rented golf carts can now be seen rolling through downtown streets.

Channelside Golf Cart Rentals said they are providing this new service to anyone who wants to see the city from a different perspective.

“We let you take it to Harbor Island, Ybor, Downtown… Close to all the nicest and coolest tourist spots,” Jacob Mercado said. While it’s a fun new option for those looking to get around, Mercado said it’s essential that drivers stay safe.

There are nearly 15,000 golf cart-related injuries each year, according to a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Channelside requires people to be over 25 to rent a golf cart.

“We tell them to wear the seat belts, to use the indicators, the horn, the mirrors. Everything that’s really important to them to drive safely and get back to us safely,” Mercado said.

News Channel 8 spoke to several people who said they were excited to try the golf carts.

“Honestly ride safe and have drivers beware of their surroundings and you should be fine,” Murphy Hawarnah said.

Others said that golf carts should have some limitations, as far as where they can go.

“Maybe don’t do it in the common areas or the busiest areas,” RJ Lark said.
