Owen Sound Police Department Sgt. Craig Matheson said police were called to a large parking lot on the east side around 6:40 p.m. after a car rolled over a sidewalk and into a wooded area, then hit a shopping cart before coming to a stop in a ditch .

When officers arrived, they found an unconscious driver and passenger in the front seats of the car.

Police determined the man’s ability to drive was impaired by drugs, Matheson said in a police press release.

A 38-year-old man from Owen Sound has been charged with drug impaired driving, possession of fentanyl and breaching a probation order.

Earlier on Saturday, a city police officer was patrolling a neighborhood on the east side when he came across an oncoming vehicle that did not have its headlights on and was straddling the center line of the street , the police press release said.

The officer stopped the vehicle just after 5 a.m. and an 18-year-old unlicensed driver was charged with impaired driving of a motor vehicle. The man then provided breath samples to police, which revealed he had consumed more than double the legal alcohol limit before driving. The vehicle was impounded.
