Red Bull Billy Cart is back in 2022

Red Bull Billy Cart Race can come from Germany as Red Bull Soapbox Race in 2000, but Australia may in fact have been the birthplace of the so-called “gravity racer”, from a design or functionality standpoint, which we affectionately referred to as the “billy cart” along the way. This is due to its origins from goat-drawn carts in the late 1800s. It’s unclear which country has the bragging rights to the genesis of the contraptions, which were mostly made by children and raced with them throughout their (actually very global) history. But in Australia we certainly lay claim to the title of “billy cart”.
And this year in December, we’re bringing back Red Bull Billy Basket – a celebration of all things crazy about Australian motoring culture, fun dressing up, one-upmanship, competition, defying (very real) gravity and simply showing off. You can sign up to participate here, but in case you need more convincing, here are 10 reasons to be excited about the return of the event and your potential to participate!

1. Call it vehicle cosplay…

If we were to use one aspect of the whole affair as our keystone, it’s the creativity that can go into effectively designing any kind of cart you want. Whether it deeply represents you, whether it’s a celebration of what’s popular right now, or just connecting with the event itself in a fun and contextual way, you’re really only limited. only by your imagination.

2. From a vehicle you build, so it’s also a car-building fantasy…

So you’ve got your cosplay and her story which we’re sure is super cool, but now the thing has to GO! (It’s the “Go” in Go-Kart.) And on that front you can hire engineers, mechanics, or that uncle everyone has who apparently built billy carts back in the day that were so fast that the police should stop to break the speed limit.

Regardless of your team composition, your cart should at least be able to move forward with a driver inside.

3. Only this transcends the fantasy of a race car driver…

But that’s not enough, you have to go fast. “Gravity-friendly” is what we roll with here in terms of design mandates, but an equal part of moving forward and being functional is having some form of control. Straights are good, until you take a turn, so now all that engineering has to blend into a build with a sense of racing dynamism. I mean, we’re not asking you to have Shane van Gisbergen gives you his blessing, but we kind of are.

We’re not suggesting you build a cart with easily exploding parts, but we could tell you that idle technology has come a very long way…

4. Which can go two ways when you’re running…

Alright, so your vehicle is all pumped up and is “gravity compatible” and if it shows up in your garage, you’re SURE SVG would give you his blessing. Now you have to put on your helmet, your racing goggles and point this thing at something…anything. We crave effort and a burning crack, sure, but trying to be friends with gravity doesn’t always see gravity turn your outstretched, wobbly hand into friendship, into kind.

5. Who is spectacularly derailed…

So you’re going to have to be ready to crash and burn. Only you hope it’s more of a slight off-line roll in the grass. Not us, however. Half the fun of all this exercise is if you win or stack, everything is done spectacularly. We’re not suggesting you build a cart with easily exploding parts, but we could tell you that idle technology has come a very long way in the past few years.

6. Or you impress the judges, the public and yourself…

But if you don’t crash or stall, the only other alternative is for you to finish! And this part is always the most rewarding. We want you to have fun and bite and fight your way to the finish as best you can, because with a good win comes bragging rights and more. Ask one of our running athletes who probably never had to pay for a coffee again after crossing the finish line.

7. And now it’s a winning fantasy…

You have seen the great celebrations in the F1the V8s, the MotoGP, the descents and more about the world of racing and what it feels like to be a winner on a course or event of such magnitude. That’s it. This is your chance. Your inner cup. This is your chance to channel your best Verstappen and Perez, SVG and Feeneyyour best Jack Miller — all!

8. And we’re all going to party…

But as the old sayings go, “winning isn’t everything”, and “it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game or the race”, and as wacky as they may be sound, they ring true here. Win or lose, the ideation, creation, revelation and racing aspect of Red Bull Billy Cart is his personal podium to all participants (say that quickly 10 times). Just being involved and following all aspects of the entry really is the most rewarding part.
