Regional District of Nanaimo Alerts Residents to Trash Cart Scam

Caller impersonated RDN official, demanded payment for carts

The Regional District of Nanaimo is alerting residents to an ongoing scam.

The RDN received a notice from a resident who was called by an individual posing as a Regional District representative. The scammer then told the resident that he owed money for curbside solid waste collection carts.

The RDN does not charge residents for curbside carts and service fees are only collected directly by the RDN or through municipal partner billing.

The resident followed the RDN’s recommended course of action, which is to hang up and call the RDN directly. Residents are advised not to provide credit card or other personal information unless they are the one who initiated the call to the RDN. Residents can also report suspicious calls to the RCMP or the fraud hotline at 1-888-495-8501.

The public can contact the RDN with questions about the services or other questions at 250-390-4111, toll-free at 1-877-607-4111 or email [email protected]
