Suspect questioned after fatal pony cart accident in Chippenham

A man was questioned on bail after a fatal pony cart accident in Chippenham.

Police rushed to the incident in Methuen Park shortly before 2pm on July 23 last year, following reports of a dead animal in the road and damage to a parked Range Rover .

A two-wheeled cart, pulled by a pony, collided with the parked car and died at the scene.

CCTV footage seen by the Wiltshire 999s showed two people boarding the trolley moments before impact – one believed to be an adult and the other a child.

Although the pony suffered horrific injuries and died almost immediately, the couple were spotted fleeing the area on foot.

Although no arrests were made, a man was questioned on bail. A decision on whether or not to charge the suspect, who is in his 30s, has not been made.

Wiltshire Police said they wanted to “reassure the public that this incident is still under active investigation”.

The force added that it is currently “liaise with the Crown Prosecution Service” on how to move forward, confirming that witnesses and experts have provided statements relating to the incident.
